An exciting opportunity currently exists for you to join the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Liaison Service. As a Hospital Liaison Officer, you will play a vital role in supporting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander patients, families and carers by providing practical assistance, support and advocacy to ensure patients, families and carers feel heard and respected.About this role
About us:
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Hospital Liaison Service provides advocacy and a cultural link between health professionals, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander inpatients, families, and carers at Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service facilities. They can break down communication barriers so that Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander patients, families and carers can better understand the hospitalisation, appropriate treatment, and discharge needs.
The outer western region of our service includes extremely remote communities. Cairns Hospital is the only major referral hospital in Far North Queensland and also provides care for people from Cape York and the Torres Strait.
About you:
In your new role you will:
- Assess the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families/carers and provide relevant culturally appropriate intervention, i.e. problem solving and practical assistance.
- Advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in relation to their needs while patients of Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service to facilitate culturally appropriate health care and improve health outcomes for patients and their families.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge and liaise with relevant community agencies, support networks and accommodation services. Identify gaps in services and/or resources and where appropriate assist with service/resource development.
- Liaise between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients/families/carers, staff and other agencies to assist with effective communication.
