About the role
This is an identified position. Under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991, there is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health Worker provides culturally responsive social, emotional and spiritual wellbeing support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experiencing mental illness. Working within the Resource Team at Metro North Mental Health, the role supports consumers, families and communities through culturally safe engagement, assessment, care coordination and recovery-focused mental health support.
The successful candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary mental health team, contributing to triage, assessment, co-case management and culturally informed interventions. The role also provides cultural advice and support to clinicians, strengthens links with community services and promotes improved social and emotional wellbeing outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers.
About you
Our ideal candidate will be someone who can carry out the following key accountabilities in accordance with the Metro North Health's values:
- Demonstrate strong knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, communities, protocols and history, with an ability to provide culturally safe support and advocacy.
- Provide culturally informed assessments, interventions and care coordination to support recovery, early intervention and relapse prevention for consumers experiencing mental illness.
- Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary mental health teams to contribute cultural advice, co-case management and support for consumers and their families.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, government agencies and non-government organisations to improve access to services and support continuity of care.
- Support cultural capability initiatives, community engagement activities and the delivery of culturally responsive mental health and social and emotional wellbeing services.
