About this role
The Opportunity
Townsville Hospital and Health Service is seeking an exceptional Chief Medical Officer to serve as the most senior professional medical leader across the region. THHS is the largest tertiary health service in northern Australia and delivers an extraordinary breadth of clinical services, including cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, intensive care, oncology, haematology, neonatology and specialist paediatrics.

About the role
As the principal source of expert advice on medical professional practice, the Chief Medical Officer is responsible for ensuring THHS delivers safe, effective and contemporary medical services aligned with organisational strategy, regulatory obligations and accreditation requirements. Reporting to the Health Service Chief Executive, the role provides leadership in medical workforce governance, professional standards, clinical performance, credentialing, rostering and scope of practice. You will guide the development of models of care, strengthen clinical governance systems and lead quality and safety initiatives across the health service.
The position supports innovation, evidence based practice and service redesign that enhances outcomes for patients and communities. It requires deep collaboration across the executive, clinical directorates, universities, professional colleges, regulators and industrial partners. With six direct reports and responsibility for an operating budget of approximately ten million dollars, the Chief Medical Officer contributes to the strategic direction of THHS while providing visible leadership that inspires confidence, capability and continuous improvement across the medical workforce.
Competitive salary and benefits:
- Remuneration will be determined under the Medical Officers (Queensland Health) Certified Agreement No. 7.

Requirements:
- Qualified as a medical practitioner, qualifications in speciality areas and current registration and / or eligible for registration as a specialist with the Medical Board of Queensland.
- Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification and registration or membership with the appropriate registration authority or association. Certified copies of the required information must be provided to the appropriate supervisor/manager prior to commencement of clinical duties.
- License to operate a ‘C' class motor vehicle
Employment Terms and Conditions:
- National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Worker Screening Check: As a Health Care worker in Queensland Health who engages in risk-assessed roles, you must hold a current disability check (Yellow Card or Yellow Card Exemption) or a NDIS worker screening check, in accordance with Part 5 of the Disability Services Act 2006 (Qld).
- Blue Card Checks: Potential applicants are advised that the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian Act 2000 requires Queensland Health to seek a ‘working with children check' from the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian prior to appointment to this position. 5.1.
- This is a Vaccine Preventable Disease (VPD) risk role.
