About the opportunity
This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic General Surgeon who is preparing for a future application to the Australia and New Zealand Training Board in Colon and Rectal Surgery (ANZTBCRS) for formal training to become a Colorectal Surgeon.
This is a high-volume, 12-month clinical fellowship in colorectal surgery in Townsville University Hospital with abundant opportunity to also develop an academic career in colorectal surgery. The successful candidate will be encouraged to complete a Master of Philosophy by publication at the James Cook University.
Townsville University Hospital is the only tertiary referral centre in North Queensland. The public hospital receives patients from as far north as Cape York Peninsula and the Torres Strait Islands, and west to Mount Isa and the Gulf of Carpentaria. It is also the major teaching hospital for James Cook University's School of Medicine.
Our Colorectal Unit in Townsville University Hospital is an expanding and collegiate unit. There are two consultant colorectal surgeons (Dr Chrispen Mushaya & A/Prof Shinichiro Sakata) who are full members of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSSANZ), one unaccredited clinical colorectal fellow, one senior SET registrar in General Surgery, one non-accredited registrar, one resident and two surgical interns.
Please note: This is a temporary part-time position, up to 12 months (working 38 hours per fortnight).
Role requirements
- Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) qualifications (or equivalent).
- Current registration or eligibility for registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia
- Appointment level will be determined by qualifications and medical registration with the Medical Board of Australia.

- Salary range: $67.51 - $91.84 p.h. (L4-L13)
- 4 weeks annual leave (pro rata) with 17.5% loading
