About the opportunity
The role of the Patient Safety Officer is to provide expertise and leadership aimed at ensuring an organisation culture where minimising preventable patient harm is a strong core value. This position works collaboratively with statewide entities, senior executive members, managers, clinical leaders, multi-disciplinary team members, external stakeholders, clinicians, patients, and consumers demonstrating a commitment to improving patient outcomes and minimising preventable patient harm.
This position leads investigations into clinical incidents as defined by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care. This position provides multidisciplinary leadership, guidance, support, and clinical expertise in the oversight of patient safety and clinical incident management processes across the Townsville Hospital and Health Service (THHS).
Temporary full-time, 14/09/2026 - 12/09/2027, possible additional 12 months extension.
Role requirements
- Applications are open to applicants from all eligible Health Practitioner (HP) professions.
- This is a Vaccine Preventable Disease risk role.

The ideal applicant will be someone who has proven ability and can demonstrate the following:
- Demonstrate advanced skills in leadership and change management skills to drive the strategic direction of THHS.
- Demonstrated advanced communication skills, including effective advocacy, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills for application at a review team and executive level with internal and external Townsville Hospital and Health Service Stakeholders.
- Demonstrated high level skills and knowledge in quality improvement and change management to ensure compliance with legislative and THHS mandatory requirements.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of clinical practice in acute, community and outreach settings across the THHS.
- Ability to foster cohesive, cooperative and collaborative working relationships across the multidisciplinary professions to ensure effective service delivery and high quality patient outcomes.
- Demonstrated high level professional integrity and strong work ethic reflected in effective self-management, a focus to drive improvement, resilience and an ability to apply critical decision making.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver proessional development to clinicians across the THHS.

- Salary range: $5557.50 - $5798.90 p.f. (HP5)
